Sedation Dentistry: An Option for an Anxiety-Free Dental Visit
Sedation dentistry has grown to be a popular method of dentistry for a lot of people. More and more people are opting for sedation dentistry due to anxiety or fears that they may have about their appointment. And, with the help of dentists, sedation dentistry is quite possible! Find out more in this article as we outline how sedation dentistry can provide you with an anxiety-free dental visit. Being aware of how sedation dentistry works may help someone who is considering their options or someone who is feeling anxious about their upcoming visit.
Minimal sedation dentistry consists of laughing gas, which is nitrous oxide. The patient will wear a breathing mask that the nitrous oxide will flow through. Laughing gas is commonly used in pediatric dentistry and more minor procedures for adults such as dental crown placement or dental fillings.
There are little to no lingering effects with laughing gas, but it does enough that the patient will feel relaxed and anxiety-free during their dental visit. There shouldn't be any needed assistance prior to an appointment where laughing gas is used.
Oral medications are another form of sedation dentistry, and they can be used moderately for more in-depth procedures. Oral medications are usually taken an hour or so before the dental procedure and allow the patient to be completely relaxed. Typically with oral medications, there is a higher chance of an anxiety-free appointment. Moderate sedation may require that the patient has someone to drive them home; the effects can linger for a while, which may cause grogginess or an inability to function 100% normally.
When a person has an upcoming invasive procedure like oral surgery or implant placement, they usually have anxiety about the pain. However, with the help of a major sedative like general anesthesia, people can feel a little less anxious about their dental visit.
General anesthesia will put the patient “under” so that they are asleep during their procedure. This allows for a completely anxiety-free dental visit, because the patient isn’t conscious or aware of what is going on. People that go under general anesthesia should definitely have someone take them home afterward.
